Ben Nevis - April 2007

Duncan and Dr Vanessa take on the Big Bad Ben. And win!

Vanessa’s just got her PhD, so she’s now Dr Vanessa! It was important to climb Ben Nevis because I failed on the last attempt a few weeks ago because of the deep snow, and to be fair, the snow wasn’t significantly different this weekend. The Carn Mor Dearg Aręte was quite scary in places! The weather in the rest of the country was sunny, but as usual (for an average of 300 of 365 days of each year) the Ben kept its head in the cloud. The most difficult bit (as usual) was climbing the snow covered headwall of Coire Leis. Last time I was there a huge avalanche went off nearby. There was little chance of that this time with the hard packed spring snow, but nevertheless… not a place to linger!
